AAC Camp

Advancing Adventures in Communicating

Advancing Adventures in Communicating (AAC) Camp is a day camp for children and young adults who use speech generating devices. It is a collaborative effort between IATP, Idaho State University and St Luke’s Children Rehab.

The day camp is hosted in the Boise area each year, with a primary goal of providing a traditional summer camp experience for those who use augmentative alternative communication. It draws participants from across the US.

Campers can participate in inclusive activities in a supportive environment while playing and communicating with others who use AAC.

The camp also provides:

  • education for families and communication partners on methods to increase communication using AAC
  • hands-on experience for graduate students and other professionals in using AAC strategies.

What to expect at AAC Camp

AAC Camp generally takes place over four days. A typical day will include a brief welcome, scheduled group activities, and an information session for families.

Group Activities generally focus on socializing and games, movement, or computers and literacy. Examples of past activities include arts and crafts, special events, music, computer literacy, drama and more! Each takes place in a designated group activity room.

Staff are on hand to provide instruction for activities as well as ensure the safety and care of all campers.

Parents/families may also attend. They can observe and learn with their campers or attend training sessions specifically for parents/families.
